France

Assisted death is currently illegal in France. The French assisted dying bill remains in a legislative deadlock after the conservative-majority Senate voted to reject the government-backed "assisted death" proposal. While the lower house (National Assembly) repeatedly approved the measure, the Senate opposes the right to die and has instead passed separate legislation focusing on palliative care.  Because the two parliamentary chambers are deadlocked, the bill faces an uncertain future and will require a joint committee (Commission Mixte Paritaire) to attempt a compromise. If they fail, the National Assembly could be given the final decision on whether to reinstate the assisted dying text.
