The story unfolding in the Marlborough Sounds
Our documentary, "The Waiting Room," is set against the stunning backdrop of the Marlborough Sounds in New Zealand. Over the course of a year, we follow the lives of four main participants whose paths intertwine around the profound theme of death and assisted dying. Sarah runs Poroporoaki, a house in the Sounds dedicated to facilitated assisted dying. Jenny assists Sarah, helping to run the Farewell Trust, which provides crucial care and support for the terminally ill in this remote region. We intimately follow Jenny and her husband Graeme as they navigate the recent diagnosis of Graeme with motor neurone disease, coming to terms with his terminal condition. The fourth participant bravely shares their journey as they have been approved for assisted dying, allowing us to witness their experience as the day of their planned death approaches. This film is important because it confronts the one certainty we all face: death. It’s a vital step in removing the veil of taboo that often surrounds discussions of mortality, emphasizing that how we die is of the utmost importance.

Our inspiration: uncovering vital truths
The inspiration for "The Waiting Room" emerged during the director's research into the social implications of New Zealand’s Assisted Dying legislation. It was during this period that a unique community in the remote Marlborough Sounds came to light. This group has established an organization dedicated to supporting terminally ill patients in their isolated region. Additionally, they provide a special house where assisted dying can take place with dignity and compassion. This extraordinary work, and the individuals behind it, revealed a compelling and urgent story that needed to be told, driving the creation of this documentary.

Why this film is important
This is a film of profound importance for everyone, young and old alike, as we all must confront the reality of death at some point in our lives.
